Food For Yorkies

Providing great food for yorkies does not have to difficult, unless you are making your own home made dog food for them.  Here are some yorkie feeding tips to keep your puppy or adult yorkies very healthy.  I’ve also included some tips on proper treats and treat sizes.  Too many dog owners give their yorkies too many treats which leads to a poor diet and obesity.

Yorkie Puppy Food

Yorkie puppies  should be fed three times a day.  This should be a high quality dry dog food.  Don’t feed a canned food diet to your puppy or adult yorkie for that matter.  Dry food is vital to maintain proper dental health.

If you are having trouble choosing between which dog food to buy, buy a bag of dog food from a brand you have heard of before, like Purina.  Going with cheaper store brought brands can get you into trouble sometimes.

Yorkie Adult Food

By 9 months you should have your yorkie on an adult dog food.  It is good to stick with the same premium brand as before, but switching the puppy food for adult food.  Food for yorkies should be provided twice daily due to their high metabolism

Fat Yorkies

Yorkies are prone to obesity just like all dogs that are fed too much.  Make sure you regularly monitor your dog’s body weight and size.  If you think your dog is getting too fat, cut back on the ration you are giving by 10%.  Feed this amount for 8 weeks, and then reweigh your dog to see if it worked.  If it did not cut back on the ration some more.

Hypoglycemia

Almost all toy breed dogs are prone to hypoglycemia as puppies.  this is because they have a low amount of energy stored and a fast metabolism.  Signs of this in yorkie puppies can range from depression, agitation, to a coma.  Karo Syrup on the gums or and IV solution from your veterinarian can resolve this problem quickly.

Treats For Yorkies

Treats should only be given sparingly, and not given on a regular basis.  If you do give them daily be sure to cut back on the ration to prevent obesity.  Normally just a spoon sized treat is enough for a Yorkie.  Also try to give them some vegetables as treats.  Some dogs love green beans or carrots so give them a try.
