How To Breed Yorkies

Breeding yorkies is a labor intensive undertaking, and one that should not be taken lightly.  Before we get into this post, please do not just casually breed your yorkie.  Make sure you know why you are breeding them in the first place. Before you breed yorkies, make sure you have a plan on what to do with all the offspring.  Each year hundreds of thousands of dogs are euthanized because no one wants them.

Choosing Stud or Dam

Compare the traits of the perspective stud and dam.  Do they have complementary features that together would result in puppies who closely match the breed standard for yorkies?

Great breeders don’t just choose any dogs to mate, but the carefully choose who will breed and who will not.

Age To Start Breeding

Do not breed any female yorkies until that are at least 18 to 24 months old.  Before this time they can get pregnant, but they are not fully mature physically, and an early pregnancy could result in birthing problems.

Pre-Breeding Physical Exam

Before breeding the female, make sure she has a complete physical with blood work done by a veterinarian, and update her vaccinations.  You want to ensure your yorkie is as healthy as possible to carry the litter through until weaning.

Waiting For Heat

The hardest part of breeding dogs is the waiting.  They only come into heat twice a year so you have to be ready.  If you can keep the stud nearby it will be must easier to know when to breed.  When the females vulva is swollen and there is discharge that means she is almost ready for breeding.

When To Breed Yorkies

Yorkies should be bred multiple times when the come into heat for the best possible chance of pregnancy.  Breed them on days 1, 3, and 5 of standing heat.  Standing heat simply means the female allows the male to mount her.  Sometimes she will only come into standing heat for a few days, permitting less mountings.

How To Tell She’s Pregnant

You or your vet cannot tell if your yorkie is pregnant for at least several weeks.  The average pregnancy last for 63 days, and you will only notice pregnancy signs for sure the last half of gestation.
