Tips For Breeding Yorkies

Breeding Yorkies should be done with a great deal of thought and consideration not only for the welfare of the dogs, but also for the future puppies.  As a dog breeder you are responsible for maintaining a pure Yorkshire Terrier breed and for finding quality loving homes for all the puppies.

Before breeding your Yorkie, take her to the vet clinic and make sure she is healthy and vaccinated.  Normally you should not start breeding until at least 2 years of age to ensure she has reached full body size.

Also, make sure your dog should be bred.  Does is conform to the Yorkshire Terrier breed standard?  If is doesn’t then your dog should not be bred.

Next you need to find a male Yorkie.  If you don’t own one, you will likely need to pay a stud fee.  Make sure the health status of the male dog also has been checked recently because there are some venereal diseases of dogs like brucellosis that you don’t want your dog to get.

Normally Yorkies are bred on days 1, 3, and 5 of standing heat.  You should try to breed her three times to maximize the chance that she will get pregnant.

During breeding session you want to be there to supervise because sometimes dogs fight and just do not get along and need to be separated quickly.  Remember when breeding Yorkies it important to keep your veterinarian involved in the process.
