Yorkie Cuts
Yorkie cuts can vary tremendously depending on what look you want and what groomer you use. I trim my yorkies myself, and you should to if you are not going to show them.Trimming your yorkie can seem overwhelming for someone who hasn’t trimmed hair before. If you cut your family’s hair you are already way ahead of the game. Trimming is similar to trimming a human.
Grooming Equipment
As any barber will tell you, you need good quality equipment if you want to do a good job at yorkie cuts. Good quality grooming equipment doesn’t have to cost a lot, but at a minimum you should have a clippers, a scissors, and a blunt ended scissors. It is also easier to trim long haired yorkies after you have given them a bath.
Also one must, is don’t trim your yorkie on the floor or your bed, if you are not comfortable in that position, you will get tired quickly and make mistakes.
Yorkie Cuts
I no longer show yorkies so I trim them myself, and you should learn too if you are showing them. If you do show your yorkies, it is worth it to have a professional dog groomer cut the dog’s hair.
I normally start off with a clipper and trim the legs to 1 1/2 to 2 inches and the body 2 inches. If you do choose to keep the hair longer, you can use a scissors for the belly area.
Always make sure you use the clipper guard and don’t free hand it, otherwise you will end up with bald patches.
Trimming The Head
Trimming the head is what takes the most amount of time. First I comb out all the hair around the head and give what could be described as a nice round bowl cut.
Just try to make the head appear as round as possible.
I use the blunt tipped scissors to trim around the nose and between the eyes, to keep hair out of the eyes.
I also keep a hemostat on hand which is good for pulling hair out of ear canals, which allows fresh air in.
Yorkie cuts don’t have to be complicated. I urge you to start doing them yourself and experiment with different yorkie cuts.
