Yorkie Temperament
Yorkie temperament, while each Yorkie is unique in general these are very loving and kind dogs. Their personality is influence a great deal by the way they are handled when they are young and by the personalities of both parents.
Yorkie temperament has a great deal to do with how they are handled when they were puppies, which is common among all animals. If the dog was mistreated as a young puppy by humans, they will likely be scared, defensive, or shy around people. If on the other hand they were treated with a lot of love and attention, then they are likely to be very loving and friendly towards humans.
Because you likely will adopt a yorkie when they are still quite young (only a few months old) you can still play a large role in the development of the yorkie temperament. If the yorkie was mistreated by handlers as a young puppy, you could over time teach it to react differently to humans.
In general yorkies have the “small dog syndrome” where they think they are much bigger than they are. Yorkies never seem to be scared of bigger dogs and will let everyone know it. Yorkies in general are very outgoing and confident dogs.
Yorkies and Children
Yorkies and children get along quite well. The only problem you might have is if the children (usually 8-10 years old) learn to tease the dog, then you will have problems. But in general yorkies and children get along great.
Yorkies and other Pets
Yorkies get along with other pets that they are familiar with. It might take a few weeks to introduce a new pet into the house before the yorkie accepts it, but in time it will, contrast that to the Chihuahua.
Yorkies in general to not get along well with other animals who are not part of the household. When they are around strange and large dogs, it is important that they stay on a leash at all time, to prevent them from getting hurt.
Overall the yorkie temperament is a kind one and one that makes a good family dog.
